Concept
Developed for Dutch Design Week 2026 in collaboration with student team VIRTU/e, MOD[us] Furniture explores the possibilities of adaptable and sustainable furniture within shared living environments. The project challenges conventional approaches to furniture design by introducing flexible solutions that respond to the changing needs of their users. Rooted in the principles of comfort, affordability, and sustainability, the collection brings together functionality, modularity, and thoughtful material choices to create furniture that can be easily built, used, repaired, and reconfigured.
The collection consists of two complementary systems: Foldable Furniture and Hexagon Furniture, both designed for a shared common room where different activities and social interactions can take place. The Foldable Furniture integrates tables, seating, and shelving directly into the walls, allowing elements to fold out when needed and disappear into the wall's surface when not in use. A multifunctional unit further explores adaptability by transforming between a workspace and a sofa, enabling the same area to accommodate studying, working, and relaxation. These solutions maximize the functionality of the available space while allowing users to shape their surroundings according to their needs.
The Hexagon Furniture introduces a modular system of semi-hexagonal chairs and tables that can be combined into different spatial arrangements. Individual elements can function independently or connect to create larger seating areas, collaborative workspaces, and gathering spaces. A dedicated hexagonal shelving system provides compact storage for the furniture when not in use. Through its flexible configurations, the collection encourages interaction and adaptability, demonstrating how furniture can support multiple functions without requiring permanent changes to the architectural space.
Visuals
MOD[us] Furniture is characterized by a geometric design language that combines modular forms, functional detailing, and a carefully selected material palette. The collection brings together natural wood surfaces, exposed metal structures, olive-green upholstery, and orange-tinted tabletops, creating a distinct visual identity while maintaining a coherent relationship between the different furniture elements. The contrast between warm materials and lightweight industrial components emphasizes the balance between comfort, practicality, and contemporary design.
The city of Los Angeles is a cultural crossroads, a thriving melting pot of merging cultures, with its vibrant and dynamic urban fabric defined by diversity, opportunity and artistic expression. This is exemplified in the density of multi-ethnic families living in the area around our plot, specifically from Latin America, setting a cultural background for the location. Los Angeles embodies the American Dream and plays a major role in the artistic world, bringing to light a wide range of artists of international renown. LA Cultiva embraces this spirit by including the local community in its design, featuring murals created by and for the local community. Vertical farms risk looking out of place, like a window to the future. Our intent is to make them feel like they were always there.
The Hexagon Furniture establishes a recognizable identity through its repeated geometric forms. The semi-hexagonal chairs feature exposed steel frames and dark olive-green cushions, while the matching tables combine slender metal structures with translucent orange-tinted plexiglass surfaces. Their geometry allows individual pieces to connect into a variety of arrangements, from compact working groups to larger communal settings. A wall-mounted hexagonal shelving system reinforces the collection's modular language while providing an organized storage solution.
